How to Get to the Summit of Mt. Whitney

Part of what I love about my hiking adventures is all the planning I get to do. Many people may love to wing it, but I don’t. Not every moment must be planned, but I like having a general idea of what I’m getting into and, most importantly, I like a plan that ensures success.

Mt. Whitney differed in one big way from all of the other hikes I plan for: It’s the highest I’ve ever gone to date.

Mt. Whitney via the Mt. Whitney Trail

Oh, did you think we were dead?

After roughly a year of planning, making lists, thinking, dreaming, panicking, training, more planning… our Whitney Adventure has come and gone. I’ve put off writing about it because aside from my day job having been so crushingly busy and exhausting that I haven’t wanted to do much of anything (other than hike), I don’t know how to put the whole experience into words that would be the poetry it all deserves.

Whitney Training: Cucamonga Peak

A few weeks ago, training for Mt. Whitney began in earnest. I’ve been hiking as much as possible (which is not as often as I’d like, frankly) and doing tough leg and cardio endurance workouts at the gym. All I can do now is what I’m able and cross my fingers that it’s enough!

Our first official training hike was up to Cucamonga Peak, one of my favorites.

Mt. Whitney Passes: Got ‘Em!

At the beginning of April, we got our passes to climb Mount Whitney. Which is very, very awesome, but it was stressful!

It all started when the application process opened up on Feb. 1. There is no advantage to applying early, by the way. The applications are gathered together on March 15 and dates are assigned at that point.

But I applied early because that’s just how I roll.
