Seriously, Use the Fire for Your Trash

By Heather

As I mentioned in the previous post, there was a lot of trash at our campsite in Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park. I’m saddened that this even needs a post, but we see this kind of thing a lot. And I want all of you doing it to stop it right now.

There are three failures here:

  • One, the host should have cleaned that up.
  • Two, the garbage was all stuff that could have gone into the fire.
  • Three, it’s littering. Walk your junk to a trash can if you’re not going to put it in the fire.

Of course, not everything is appropriate for the fire.

Anything flammable or toxic when burned obviously can’t go in there. Your empty propane canisters, spent lighters and plastic should stay out.

But almost anything else can go on in: Paper plates and bowls, used napkins, utensils, wooden skewers, hell, even your cigarette butts. I even threw a Cooking Light magazine into the fire last week! Crazy, I tell you!

If your stuff can’t go into the fire, then it goes in the garbage. Never on the ground!
